Our past informs our future

Heritage

In 1896 the Reverend N. B. Grubb, pastor of the First Mennonite Church of Philadelphia, founded Frederick Living in affiliation with the Eastern District Conference of the Mennonite Church USA. Pastor Grubb envisioned a vibrant ministry where older adults of all faiths could live together in a community marked by mutual caring. Pastor Grubb’s vision has grown into a lively, thriving community that continues to be an example of Christ’s love by offering older adults a personalized invitation to “Live well with us.”

Philosophy

Since our founding we have remained rooted in our Mennonite heritage, especially in the deeply held Mennonite concerns for valuing life, enriching the whole person, and living meaningfully and peacefully in community.

Today Frederick Living is a diverse community made up of residents, employees, and volunteers from many backgrounds and faith traditions, but we share a commitment to living well every day in all facets of our lives. Our programs and services seek to engage each individual in a rich life marked by curiosity, learning, and a sense of purpose.

True to our roots, we believe that community is more than having fun together—though it certainly is that. Community also entails living with high regard for our neighbors, generosity toward those in need, and a willingness to invest generously of our gifts, talents, and energies to build a community that values each of us. In short, we seek to live peacefully together, fostering a sense of inclusion and connection, even as we honor and respect each other’s autonomy and freedom.
